I’m a swinger. Don’t get excited, I mean I’m a swing voter, independent, no party, no commitment. My vote is usually based on my own research, avoiding the media, personal beliefs and needs rather than what the cool crowd is doing. In fact, I didn’t vote in the last primary simply because I hadn’t done the research to ensure a fair decision. And while sometimes I lean right, I [...]I was just contacted by the Review-Journal reporter who did the story on my Cannery incident a couple of weeks ago. He asked a favor. It's easier to explain, I think, if I just quote his request: ******** I'm writing a story tomorrow about a new Web site that has deals for LV locals. It is sponsored by the LVCVA. If you have many locals following your site, it would be great if you could help me out by posting my contact info ASAP. I want to hear from LV locals and ask them what they think casinos,…About a year ago we learned that Daniel Negreanu may have a brief cameo in X-Men Origins: Wolverine . Looks like Daniel's footage made it off the cutting room floor and into the movie. Not sure if this is all there is, but hey, if that was any one of us Entities , we'd have it on imdb.com faster than Jason Biggs blew a load on Shannon Elizabeth in American Pie .If you watched the Masters TM at all last week, you definitely saw the AT&T commercial for TOMS with "Chief Shoe-Giver" Blake Mycoskie (video below). Talk about a turn-around. Four years ago this same guy was a driving force behind GreenTiePoker.com (read more about it here ), a site that gave "men what they really want: the green, the girls, the glory." Started in conjunction with UltimateBet , it eventually went the way of other poker DoDo bird sites like Poker Blue and Duplicate…Frank Frisina, Life’s A Bluff, needs you to please help find his niece Jennifer. The 14-year old has been missing since Saturday when she left home to visit a friend. Her info below courtesy Pokerati. Age 14 approx 5′ 5″ 120/130 lbs brown hair/eyesAge 14, approx 5′ 5″, 120/130 lbs, brown hair/eyes This is a rather unusual post, and one that is not pleasant to write except to help in some way. Frank Frisina, one of the main dudes over at Life’s A Bluff and poker industry friend, is in desperate need of help. His 14-year old niece, Jennifer, [...]Another one bites the dust. It was in late March that Bugsy’s Club closed and sent its players to PokerStars, but another shut its online poker operations yesterday. PokerRoom.com posted a message on its site, including a note suggesting that players are switching to bwin, where special bonuses await the fleeing players. Here is the [...]
The Tom "durrrr" Dwan versus Patrik Antonius challenge match is winging along right now as they played their fourth session in four days last Saturday night. After completing 11,949 of the 50,000 hand, multi-table match, Antonius holds a relatively small lead of $61,412. Although Poker News is reporting on this match and providing card-by-card updates of the big hands, it seems to me that this match might not be decided on the big hands—where both players are all-in before the river—but on the…The next story in line is "Poker and Shooter," by Sue DeNymme. This is the tale of a high school hazing gone bad, and it only passingly mentions poker. I found it most unpleasant, primarily because there is not a single likable character in it. They are all pretty despicable, and I don't think any reader could care what happens to them. Waste of space. "The Monks of the Abbey Victoria," by Rupert Holmes, is a clever and enjoyable piece. Our narrator, the new guy at NBC headquarters…
Vegasward we go. Not much time to talk. A quick trip, this, arriving later this morning and leaving Sunday afternoon. The 2009 Fédération Équestre Internationale World Cup Finals is happening. That’s dressage, folks. Comes to Vegas every odd-numbered year (is in Europe for the evens). As mentioned here before, Vera Valmore rides, and so she’ll be there watching most of the dressage events. Vera and I were there in ’07, as documented in these here “Shamus in Vegas” posts . I’ll be at the big…

Got A-K unsuited on the button, raised it up to three times the big blind, and got two callers. Then the flop came K-K-K, giving me quads right out of the gate, something I’ve never had happen when I was holding just one of the quad cards in the pocket. To be honest, I was a little stunned and didn’t even realize what was going on at the table until I realized that there had already been a bet and a call…It's almost impossible not to have fun playing beer pong. You're about as likely to hear, "Yeah, that was a boring night of beer pong" as you are "I just wasn't a fan of that blowjob." Throw some sick gambling in there to boot, and the experience is even that much better (would hold true for both the beer pong and the blowjob, actually). With that in mind, the Doyle Brunson Beer Pong Challenge II happened on Monday. Some highlights you'll find in the below vid: 1)…22 years since I drove to Las Vegas, walked into the Golden Nugget, and applied to deal the last Grand Prix Tournament hosted there? I chatted with Frank Cutrona and Jimmy Knight, Jimmy was the day shift supervisor, and he sent me to the dealer’s box to audition. He got called away and had a [...]Holy fucking shit. I knew they fucking jumped the shark. Now they are playing goddamn episodes of "I should be dead". You know that show where people get totally fucked up and they barely survive. I love the show but it has NOTHING to do with animals. I get it. You guys figured out that people do not want to watch bee's fucking 24hrs a day! Good for you for realizing this but instead of swapping out shows and calling it Animal planet get a pair of fucking balls and rename your stupid station.…I am fucking ranting my ass off these days. Let's rant on my good friend PokerPeaker . He recently picked his 5 worse movies ever. His choices were: Showgirls, The Matrix Revolutions, Godzilla, The Notebook and Halloween - The Curse of Michael Myers. Holy fuck what a retard. First off how the fuck can PokerPeaker say Showgirls is top 5 bad movies?!?! Have you seen that movie! Fucking awesome movie! That lead chick is fucking hot as shit. I spanked my way through that movie several times. Goddamn I love…You whores of Dover annoy me. All you do is fuck your husband and think it makes you great. If it made you special they would not be fucking every whore they could find on their "Business" trips. So screw you. If you wanted to know why I was disheveled at my Daughters soccer game I would have told you.. my wife sucked the soul from my body and my lifeless zombie corpse is doing the best it can until she kills me. Makes perfect sense if you just ask. Fucking whore.
(See here for Part 1 and Part 2 ) One third down, two thirds to go. There were seven courses in our stomachs, and fourteen remaining. It was at about this time that the head chef wandered over and mentioned that having the menu in front of us would help with the note taking. He disappeared for a moment, then came back, placing it on the raised bench in front of us. As Saunter and I locked eyes for a moment, Chef Voltaggio realised that we might not want to see it, preferring to be surprised, and quickly…So the "blow-up" between Joan Rivers (pictures here) and Annie Duke on Celebrity Apprentice wasn't really that big of a deal. Joan (seen here) is a bit of a drama queen and over-protective of her daughter (as she should be). Annie caught some shit for not being a project manager yet, but stepped up for this week's episode, even though for all intents and purposes she's PM'd every challenge. Otherwise Donald Trump , who we used to love and even played his board game, is too…One of the standard rules in O-8 states that you should not play a hand with a 9 in it. Sadly, 9-9 is my favorite PP (and apparently for Bacon Bikini Mary as well). I have tried to stay away from hands with 9s, but sometimes the poker gods like to play cruel tricks on you. Scene: $4/$8 O-8 game at Red Rock For about the umpteenth time in a row, the flop came 9-9-x. Q, the guy to my left, and I started commenting on the frequency of the 9s. (If I was playing props with Prop Betting Buddy, I would have…I found this to be totally hilarious unlike some of my WoW posts. PETA the animal cruelty people decided to hold this protest against seal clubbing . The smart people of PETA decided to setup a protest in WoW at an area called the Borean Tundra where seals are clubbed and skinned by some of the in game characters. The protesters would kill the seal murderers and make WoW a safer place for baby seals. It got some press in some of the WoW fan sites . Predictably when you set out to do something in a game…Coming up on April 27. Full details here . Nine players signed up already. Warning: Registration ends two minutes before the start of the event, so you'd better hustle and get in NOW! Rumor has it that Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, Jennifer Harman, Chris Ferguson, Phil Laak, and Patrik Antonius will all be putting in appearance. I can't confirm that; as I said, it's only a rumor. But just in case it's true, you wouldn't want to miss it, would you?
Breathing in, I am aware that I am breathing in. Breathing out, I am aware that I am breathing out. In this way, I train myself. Breathing in, I am aware that I am sitting at a poker table. Breathing out, I smile to the poker universe. Breathing in, I watch the cards being dealt. Breathing out, I observe the players on my left. Breathing in, I look at my cards. Breathing out, I fold. Breathing in, I watch the hand play out. Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out. Breathing in, I am aware…Some people have nice Easters . My Easter went kind of like this. My wife comes downstairs to wake me up at 7AM. She is all up in my face asking if I got her email about taking the Easter Baskets out of the car and hiding them for the kids. I am like what fucking email you stupid cunt. I am grumpy in the morning. So sue me. She tells me Sarah is in tears that the stupid bunny has not come. I quickly run out to the car barefoot and grab the bags. I hide them downstairs where the kids have not been yet. The…I like the Animal Planet. It has some cool shows. Mostly I just watch the "When Sharks Attack" type shows but it has some other good stuff. I was watching today and just had to say what the heck? They started a new show about a chick that is an FBI agent. To make it about "Animals" they have her as deaf with a deaf dog? Is there such a thing? I know blind people have dogs but deaf? Can I get a Chihuahua for being half deaf? Did Animal planet figure out animal shows do not pay the bills?…Hey, I coined a phrase! http://wordlust.blogspot.com/2009/04/politi-dude.html Glad to see that all these years of compensating for my limited vocabulary with hyphens has finally paid off. High on the glory and power of being recognized for my creative typing by non-poker strangers, expect many failed attempts to repeat myself to ensue. In the meantime, enjoy all sorts [...]This week it’s a new lineup of players on High Stakes Poker, as the Day 2 taping series of shows begins with Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Laak, Sam Simon, Nick Cassavettes, Daniel Negreanu, Patrik Antonius, Howard Lederer and Joe Hachem trying to take each other’s money. Again, this week’s show was put up on Youtube [...]The PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker wrapped up yesterday, as did my work helping cover the sucker. As was the case last September with WCOOP, it was again a lot of fun to be scribblin’ alongside and collaboratin’ with a good group of folks. Am glad to have it in the rearview, though, as the frequent late nights (sometimes ’til sunrise) screwed with the sleep schedule a bit more than yr cranky gumshoe would’ve liked (or had necessarily anticipated). Goes with the territory, of course.…
One of the hardest questions to answer when playing a cash game is knowing when to get up. There have been times when I have sat at even for 5 hours, and then suddenly I have a massive rush of cards. Then there are other times when I am up just a little bit and things take a turn for the worst. I know several people who set goals for themselves, and as soon as they hit that goal they rack up and run for the door. I have seen other people who hit hand after hand building a big chip stack, then they go broke…

I started this book review well over a year ago, and I'm still not finished with it. Just as embarrassingly, I'm also still not finished with the book. For those new to the blog, or who happen not to remember every single post I've ever written (and shame on you!), I started this collection of poker-related crime short stories, edited by Otto Penzler, back in January, 2008. You can see the first three parts of the review here . It's not that I'm not…
But if you try sometimes well you just might find You get what you need Oh baby, yeah, yeah!Poker content - Lost my ass in Tunica. Lost my ass again at BadBlood's. Shoved into the nuts and lost my ass at my home game. And I still love the game. We did wonder what type of thread we could get started of jealous bitches on the forums if we posted that Lee Jones made a McDonald's run at Blood's home game, though. That dude is great fun, but I hate getting in big hands with him. You'd think he'd played the game once or twice. Today was first tech for the Avett Brothers, and it was a…Poker content - Lost my ass in Tunica. Lost my ass again at BadBlood's. Shoved into the nuts and lost my ass at my home game. I'm about halfway through Winning Omaha/8 Poker by Mark Tenner and Lou Krieger. It's OK, but I'm wondering if it is practical to play the way the authors suggest, or whether it could even be profitable to do so. Maybe I should put the caveats up front: I'm far from an expert in the field. In fact, it's precisely because I always feel that I'm just making it up as I go along when I play the O/8 portions of my almost nightly HORSE tournaments that I wanted to read something to give me…The Hard Rock Poker Lounge held a Stripper Poker tournament last Friday. To paraphrase Dennis Green , "It was what you thought it was." Pretty much a bunch of strippers from Rick's Cabaret showed up for a regular tournament that included way more old old old people than we expected. Says one of the exotic dancers there on if she even knew how to play poker, "I had a cram session this morning." We bet you did. Watch Ricks Cabaret Strippers Playing Poker at the Hard Rock…It’s the question running amok in blogging circles. It plagues readers’ innermost thoughts and causes rampant speculation. What am I having for lunch today? Where is California Jen? I’ve been here and there, but over the past two weeks, I’ve been relatively consumed with the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) on PokerStars as part of [...]It was a not-so-happy Easter for one family a few houses from Pokerati’s LV headquarters, where some foreclosures are proving to be messier than others. Not sure how exactly it all went down, but big trucks arrived at 7 am, along with some angry door knockers … the occupants either ran off or were [...]
[Content Disclosure: a bit of poker, a hunk of life, a twitter of a notion, a ponder of a potential, adrift in an ocean of verbs ] A writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people. -- Thomas Mann There was a time when I was in my mid-twenties when I was determined to be a writer. From that experience I can honestly say that determination has nothing to do with be a writer. I suppose that is not a unique observation. Many endeavours require skill before commitment and at…older posts: Poker blogs posts
