There are days where I just want to stay in bed and munch on chips and dip all day while playing multiple tournaments online. However, I have to motivate myself to get in the shower and drag myself to the overcrowded casino because it is Friday night and the games are supposed to be good. These days it seems like such a hassle to get in my car and drive to the casino because the economy isn’t that good and there just isn’t as much easy money being thrown around. More often than not I’d rather just…

The UFC appears to be turning its back on Full Tilt Poker. For the MMA fans out there: if you follow the UFC , you've probably noticed Full Tilt Poker logos and patches increasingly taking over the octagon. Looks like that's coming to an end, at least for a little while. The UFC today informed some of its business associates (and fighter managers) that Full Tilt Poker is banned from appearing on fighter's trunks, corners, or in the octagon itself. With the amount of money FTP was dumping…

We tried to get half Filipina, half Puerto Rican model Justene Jaro as a last minute fill in for Snake, but a little thing called a "restraining order" got in the way. Apparently it's illegal to stand outside someone's window with your pants around your ankles every day for a week. Whatever. View more (some NSFW) photos of Jaro here . Not sure how it's happened so quickly, but Dream Team Poker seems to be building some pretty big buzz. So...the Entities who compromise Wicked Chops…

...surely two straight flushes in two days is worth mentioning. Didn't even need for crubs to get there for this one. I don't mind online poker being so obviously rigged, when it's rigged in my favor. My opponents had better start donning their tinfoil hat avatars .

It seems that this year the poker gods are trying to demonstrate to the world the power of the mighty Deuce-Four. See how reigning world champion Peter Eastgate wields it as a bluff to take down a pot, after wrongly losing faith in it mid-hand on a previous episode.

From this week's episode of High Stakes Poker, we see more of the faces of poker. First, this is how you execute the fake yawn to look bored when you have pocket aces: But then when your aces get cracked for $548,700, you first look away to hide your disgust... ...then turn back around to reluctantly settle up: If you're Barry Greenstein and you got all your money in bad but sucked out for half a mil, you display true facial minimalism thusly: On one of the early HSP episodes, after a big pot, Gabe…

So at one point Friday I twittered something to the effect of "Lee Jones is serving us homemade pizza in his kitchen while wearing an apron with sharks on it." Or something like that. These are not words I thought I would be writing a few years ago. Aside from the fact that prior to watching the Moneymaker WSOP I didn't know who Lee was, I also would likely have laughed in your face if you told me that one day I'd drive 2 1/2 hours to play poker in a buddy's basement, then drive back…

Saturday night I played at one of the most wacky $1/$2 NLHE tables ever. ( Katkin can vouch for me on this one.) Themes of the evening: 1. Who does that person look like? It all started when someone made the comment that Katkin looked like a certain Hollywood A-lister. I bet you can't guess who . . . That led to the dealer talking about how he is often mistaken for Carlton (a/k/a Alfonso Ribeiro) or Wayne Brady and then that further devolved into assigning celebrity look-alike status to the rest of the…

Yesterday I happened to be hunting around over on Hendon Mob looking up players’ stats. That’s the comprehensive, quite reliable site that compiles poker tournament winnings and presents them in a way where one can quickly see a player’s cashes, overall earnings, year-to-year stats, and so forth. Nearly 100,000 players are listed there. Came across one dude’s totals and when I saw his lifetime earnings had one of those “yeah, but” moments as I wondered just how many tourneys he’d actually…

Sometimes I imagine a poker world where each player is hooked up to a set of electrodes and if they don’t make a decision within a specific time period “ZAP!” they are forced to fold or make a decision by a refreshing stream of electrodes. Since we don’t live in my perfect world and there are no time regulations in live games, what constitutes adequate time for live action? There is definitely a fine line when calling a clock on someone at the poker table. I have been in tournaments where a…

A lot of people ask me what the best way to improve their poker game is and for many of them it would be if they quit playing poker. But there’s another group of people who may be decent poker players but they feel like they’re stagnating. They don’t feel like they’re improving. This list is less about turning you from a losing player into a winning one and more about putting new life into an already decent game. If you’re still learning the game or you’re a losing player there’s no harm in…

On every poker training website you’ll see countless forms of the top starting hands for Texas Hold ‘Em. While knowing these hands is a must for any serious poker player, knowing the absolute worst starting hands will ensure that you avoid these card combinations like the plague. In almost no situation should you be playing [...]

I got this hand while playing in a HORSE sit-and-go. I thought that one of my opponents must have a low hand for half the pot, but was delighted to see all the chips coming my way. A straight flush is such a thing of beauty. It would be a shame to lose half of the pot to some crappy rough 8-low hand--a point I also made here , the last time I got a straight flush online. Note that both straight flushes were in crubs, which makes perfect sense, since, as I have been learning from B.W.O.P., crubs always get…

Just mere moments after it just aired, GSN puts up this week’s episode on Youtube right away for you to enjoy. Barry Greenstein drops a new phrase on the GSN viewers early in the show.

Earlier this month I mentioned a weird form of theft of my posts. Here's another example I just found: http://www.liveinternet.ru/users/rengersi/post97783376/ First, they introduce apparently random typographical errors. Second, they use the content of this post but the title of this one . But I think the ultimate insult was putting Justin Timberlake's name at the top of it. If anybody knows Russian and can take a stab at telling me what the foreign content of this page is about, I'd appreciate…

My "backroomed by casino security goons" incident is featured in the Las Vegas Review-Journal today. See here . For me, the most interesting parts are the Cannery's official response, the gaming board official's comments, and the response of the North Las Vegas police, none of which I had heard before. The Cannery: Cannery spokesman Tom Willer said that although there is no rule explicitly prohibiting photography in the casino, guards considered Woolley a security threat. Aha! So the…

Watch Katrina Bikini Girl Darrell Host Hawaiian Tropic Zone Party We're American Idol junkies. We've never been shy about that. Last thing you want to do right now is start a convo with an Entity about anything relating to Danny Gokey (total douchebag), Scott MacIntyre 's [lack of] singing ability, the premature booting of Alexis Grace , or how the judges seem to be rigging this season a bit. Anyway, we posted pics of American Idol "Bikini Girl" Katrina Darrell back during the…

Yes, there is a PokerWorks HORSE tourney on Sunday the 22nd. Yes, I will be there! I registered yesterday. Any others? I miss one Sunday and the whole thing goes to hell. I thank you Andrew for showing and registering in my absence…see you there tomorrow. BTW, I just checked and I’m still the only [...]

photo: Alex Garcia/Chicago Tribune The Empress Casino in Joliet, IL, and its poker room of course, had to be evacuated yesterday as a big fire threatened to turn the first casino I ever gambled in to ashes. At age 19, a couple of my Northwestern classmates and I would skip a few classes sessions of Super Mario [...]

Two years ago, J.J. Liu , a woman, almost became the first woman to win a WPT open tournament by almost capturing the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star event. Then last year, Jennifer Harman , a woman, almost became the first woman to win a WPT title by almost capturing the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star event. This year, it was Kathy Liebert , a woman's turn. Liebert was chip leader with only three remaining. But after a grueling heads-up match (eventually breaking the record for most hands played…

Sorry to go all non-poker on you but I read this article in the Financial Times and beer came out of the beer coming out of my nose. Banker fury over tax ‘witch-hunt’ By FT reporters Published: March 20 2009 19:39 | Last updated: March 20 2009 23:32 Bankers on Wall Street and in Europe have struck back against moves by US lawmakers to slap punitive taxes on bonuses paid to high earners at bailed-out institutions. Senior executives on both sides of the Atlantic on Friday warned of an exodus of…

In November I spent an inordinate amount of time obsessing over what appeared to be phony money piled on a poker tournament table. See here . Tonight I was catching up on this season's World Poker Tour events, and caught another instance of the same thing. This is from the Borgata Poker Open. The episode was actually the first half of the final table, and the screen shots below are from the previews to the finale, which is why they have credits rolling over them. If you look closely, you can see that…

Today's poker: I walked down to Binion's. I won some money. I came home. The end. There being no other poker content of interest today, we now turn to the non-poker portion of this post: some of the odd sights on my way home. Before I even left Binion's, I saw a bunch of these guys: I admit it. I had never heard of the " Soldiers for Jesus Motorcycle Club " before. Heck, I didn't even know Jesus rode a motorcycle! Then I came across a band playing on stage: Another thing I did not…

Our Friday Night Parting Shot Girl this week is 21-year-old model Laura Leigh Siani of Staten Island, N.Y. Siani is on the ABC reality show True Beauty , or maybe she was on it. Have no idea if this show is still airing, or what it's about, which is a shame because Laura is insanely hot and has a killer body so we'd probably watch it. Oh wait, we just read that Tyra Banks co-produces the show. Hate Tyra Banks. She used to be fun to look at when we didn't know she talked but now she's like…

I've had a very interesting time the last few days that almost broke me. Instead of concentrating on any of that, I'll give you a peak at my guest judging gig for Cowboy Bill's bull riding contest. The video is embedded below, I would suggest hitting it up quickly before it gets banned. For most of you the video is not safe for work. Unless someone at the final table is blind and only got there through sympathy votes and we're not aware of it, the only real storyline we're following at the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star now is if Kathy Liebert , a woman, can win her first WPT title and become the first woman to ever capture a World Poker Tour title.* This is Liebert's sixth WPT final table. Phil Ivey got the monkey off his back last year at the LAPC, will Kathy do the same this year? She'll be third in chips entering play,…

Now I am no genius business person like Riggs, hell I barely understand how I have a job. However here is my take on the AIG bonus issue. I have been against corporate bonus payouts since their inception. All across the board these have been structured wrong. Basically it seems to my simple brain that CEO type people design these bonus ideas for other CEO type people. So obviously they have no real incentive to improve the company and basically are just there to make some people rich. If they do happen to…

For those who missed it live yesterday … this week’s episode employs a slimmed down cast with just me and Gary Wise, which is kinda like the difference between The Beatles and Wings, but still … with BJ, Parvis, and Ringo off on other ventures, Gary, Huff, and I break down in nitty-gritty detail whether [...]

I am a huge basketball fan, especially college, and so always follow the NCAA tournament fairly closely. Used to play a lot of hoops, which I think makes the game all the more interesting to watch. Haven’t played so much over the last few years, although every now and then I will come out of retirement to sink the odd fifty-footer . I also would generally always join a pool or two, sometimes expending a lot of effort during Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday deciding how to fill out them brackets, then --…

I received a email a few days ago asking if watching a lot of poker on TV can make you a better player. While I do agree that watching poker can add more to your game than watching baseball could add to your swing, I definitely feel that the type of poker represented on TV doesn’t quite showcase the proper playing method that most students of the game should adhere to. What are some of the issues? Well, the main problem is that on most of these shows you’re witnessing pros play against other pros for…

It has been kind of a dry spell for interesting poker-table stories. It's not that I've been withholding them--it's that not much blog-worthy has been happening. That changed tonight. I was playing at the Rio. I had thought it would be full of March Madness people paying more attention to basketball and their sports book tickets than poker. Surprisingly, I was wrong about that, and nobody at my table was giving the televisions more than an occasional glance. Oh well. Soon after I sat down, I was…

I sat down to write what will be the next post about my encounter with a full-blooded spewtard, and wasn't sure what sort of image might work well to illustrate it. So I did a Google image search for "spewtard," just to see what might show up. I literally LOL'ed when I saw whose picture was right there in the first row of the first page of results: That's right--it's Cardgrrl ! Hey, Google doesn't lie.

A common misconception with beginning poker players is that they believe they can consistently post winning sessions from the start of their careers. Considering that most new players don’t even have a basic concept of odds, hand strength or tells, this is highly unlikely, yet losing immediately and often when they first start playing is [...]

Speaking of bikinis … there’s another poker-skin photo shoot fixin’ to go down in Vegas … reportedly Tiffany Michelle, Erica Schoenberg, and Evelyn Ng will be waxing up for a big poker-themed spread slated for a summer issue of KnockOut magazine, which is basically like Maxim Wicked Chops, only with more chicks and less poker. I appreciate all the comments but you really should congratulate me. Either that or offer me a conciliatory blow job (No not you Sucko! Only women!). I mean being miserable in an unhappy marriage where both people know it is over but can not pull the trigger is no fun. Sleeping on the couch causes neck cricks too. So really this will be a happy time while sort of weird. Also nothing big is going to happen for a little while. Like I said we want to plan this out and do it right. I think like at least three…

kinda…sorta. I’m heading into Las Vegas today, after an ultra sound and blood drawing for a test that can only be detected by a blood test. Sounds kinda weird right? Right! I’m all for preventative maintenance and it’s just routine-schmoutine stuff. I’ve been a busy little beaverette and have a zillion and more things going on. Home [...]

They're in the money at the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars , with a friends and family TM leader board going into Day 3 play. Only four so-called "shooting stars" remain. Michael Kamran has the chip lead, stacked at 570,500. He's followed by Tony Behari (553,000) and Chris Moore (539,500). Notables still alive include Kathy Liebert (385,000), Paul Wasicka (297,000), Steve Brecher (151,500), Hoyt Corkins (124,500), the hotter than a really spicy dish of Indian food Vivek Rajkumar (124,000),…

I commute in a green fashion like a granola eating hippy. I do this because I hate driving not because of any save the planet bullshit. I find it very difficult to commute however. My two options consist of the following. First I can take the Green Line. Normally besides the 500 stops on the way into Boston this is pretty pleasant. However it is also very uncomfortable. Normally I have to stand for forty five minutes. While this is probably good exercise for my Mr. Potato head body it is not very…
